Description
This painting is by French artist Leon Richet. In his day he was a popular member of the Barbizon movement and painted many landscapes in this theme.
I restored this painting back to its former glory for its current collector. The painting had fallen into disrepair and suffered from exposure to moisture. There was issues of many long cracks in the surface of the painting and very yellowed original damar varnish. After extensive cleaning of the buildup of grime, mildew and mold the canvas was conditioned to return it to some flexibility. The stretching had become very taut and was literally tearing the painting apart.
All of the varnish coating was entirely removed down to the paint surface. The original colors were revealed after the heavily yellowed varnish was gone. There were a number of holes that went through the canvas and those were repaired. Cracks were filled and stablized. There is minimal touch up to the paint as all fill ins were done under high magnification. Therefore the painting still looks original without any evidence of retouching.
The original gesso frame and the painting have been reunited and is being hung in the collection of its new owner.
