Chief Mungo Martin Totem Carver

Description
Chief Mungo Martin was of the Kwakwaka 'wakw peoples. A northwest Indian, he was a master in the ancient art of totem carving. I would watch Chief Martin at his Thunderbird Park lodge in Victoria, British Columbia carving these magnificent poles from huge cedar logs. He worked fast and with surety. I thought nothing of it, after all didn't everyone have totem pole carvers in their neighborhood. What I was watching though was a living historical figure creating these fantastic masterpieces right before my eyes. This painting is an illustration for a book and is in the collection of the Royal British Columbia Museum.
