Description
An Art Restoration project. This painting was created around 1880 by Charles Ferdinand Ceramano. A Belgian painter who lived and worked in the Barbizon region of France. Ceramano was known for these lavish pastoral paintings that often featured sheep grazing in fields.
This restoration project had a high degree of difficulty due to the fragile condition of the canvas. The canvas was torn in six places in the sky due to the dryness and tension of the stretching. The painting was still in its original gesso and gilt frame that was also in need of complete restoration with many missing and shattered parts.
The painting was extensively cleaned over a period of a month until the original damar varnish was completely removed. There was also random paint loss due to the dryness of the canvas substrate. After conditioning the canvas the process of repairing the tears took place and with minimal paint coverage, the areas of the seams were filled and new color was added. The result is seamless to the eye and very little overpainting occurs. The hand of the Shepherdess was repainted matching the color and and brushstrokes of the artist.
The completed painting now is back in the home of the original collector. The painting has been in the family collection now for close to 70 years. Along with a completely restored frame of considerable size the painting looks magnifiicent.
